The start of a new (Celtic) year

Did you know that the end of the Celtic calendar year is (or was...) celebrated around October 31? Neither did I. But now that I do know, it's a perfect opportunity to set a couple of goals to see me through to our new year.

Are you with me? Let's all set a goal that we will achieve by January 1, 2008. My goal is health related. I've been really bad in that area. I am going to exercise three times a week and lose five pounds by the new year. And if I have a bad week, I don't get to scrap the whole plan - I keep going with my goal!

What goal will you set? I'd love to hear yours, so leave me a comment!

Hi, Holli Jo! I love your idea of setting goals to be reached by Jan. 1. I'm in!

Now, this goal may seem silly, but last January, one of the things I wanted to be able to do before 2008 rolled around was a split. I was pretty diligent about practicing once or twice a week (holding very painful stretches for 2 - 3 minutes at a time), but then got lazy.

I should mention I've never in my life done a split. Ever...

Anyone have any tips?!!

Good luck with your exercise goal - I like it!

My goal is to not gain weight over the holidays. I would like to maintain my weight within 1 or 2 pounds.

I'm going to have to keep exercising and not pig out on Thanksgiving or during Christmas time, but I think I can do it.

Megan -

I'm glad your in for a goal! I don't think the splits are a silly goal - I was actually thinking about it the other day because I have to do a bunch of stretches for my back.

Here are my tips for doing a split (I was on a dance team in High School and was able, even in my nonflexibility, to do a split.):

You have to stretch daily or you lose your progress. And the stretches shouldn't be painful - work up to deeper stretches slowly.

What I did was to do several different leg stretches while watching TV. You go further into the stretch because you're relaxed and holding it for a long time.

Good luck! You'll have to come back and tell me how your goal goes - it's quite an interesting one!

What a great goal. The holidays are a time when it's easy to go overboard. Make sure you enjoy some of the good food so you don't feel deprived. I wish I could be there for Thanksgiving!

I'm slow to comment because I had to decide which goal I was going to go with (out of the 8 million floating around in my head). The one that I chose is to not buy anything that I will immediately start debating about taking back. In other words, no impulse buys.

Today I managed to put back a totally cute $5 t-shirt and some toy cars and left the store with only the envelopes and tupperware that I went to buy. One shopping trip at a time!
